Visitors to the Mount Evans Recreation Area often confuse the two animals. Each has distinct characteristics that set it apart from the other. Let’s take a moment to look at these contrasting qualities. One distinction between these two high elevation mammals is coloration. Mountain goats have shaggy white coats and black eyes, nose and horns. Bighorn sheep have brown coats, with white on their rump, belly, back legs and muzzle, and have brown eyes. Most sheep in the Mount Evans area are female like this one, or young males. Wildlife is best observed behaving naturally. Never feed wild animals, always watch them from a distance and keep dogs leashed and away from wildlife.
